Talented University of Derby students will be among those performing at a live music night in the city in aid of children living with the effects of cancer.

Funds raised will go to “Sophie’s Journey” which provides children and teenagers up to 18 years of age and living in the UK with a caravan holiday on the Lincolnshire coast.

The charity was set up in memory of 12-year-old Sophie Robinson who lost her two-year battle with a brain tumour in January 2016.

Derby student bar “67 Bridge Street” is hosting the free-entry music event on Saturday May 27th from 6.30pm.

The music begins at 7pm with Derby-based guitarist Gareth Icke and is followed by singer Katie Cooper, from Nottingham. After 8pm are two of the University of Derby’s own students, Mo Ralph and at 8.45pm Loughborough-based acoustic guitarist Melanie Page. The evening is rounded off by Indie Psych Folk duo Simon Waldram and Emzae.

The event has been organized by Sophie’s mother Stacey Southwell and University of Derby nursing degree student Imran Khan to raise the profile of the charity outside Lincoln.

Imran said: “Since Sophie passed away her family and friends have been working tirelessly to raise funds to place two static caravans at Golden Sands in Mablethorpe.

“They are for young people, aged up to 18 and living with the effects of cancer, to use for free holidays with their families.

“Inside 12 months enough money was raised to buy the first caravan and three families have enjoyed a week’s stay already since March. We have some availability in June, July and August and welcome enquires.”

Sophie’s Journey is now hoping to buy a second, more advanced caravan which can accommodate the needs of children and teenagers with the type of physical effects Sophie experienced.

Donated sporting memorabilia, including signed Leicester City, Derby County and Aston Villa football shirts, will be among items being raffled and auctioned on the night.
