We visited Studio Chocolate in Nottingham and met up with Founder and Chocolatier, Ellie Wharrad. If you are looking for some creatively decorated tasty treats, then look no further.
After always being a fond foodie and with little idea on which direction to go following her A-Levels, Ellie decided she was going to do something she loved and so, after researching various options, she discovered Le Cordon Bleu London and enrolled on a Pastry & Confectionery programme. As part of the Diplôme de Pâtisserie, which is recognised globally as one of the most respected culinary qualifications in pastry and baking, Ellie expanded her knowledge through the teachings of the schools classically trained Pâtisserie Chefs. It was here that Ellie fell in love with the art of chocolate and all the different ways chocolate can be used to create artistic masterpieces, from painting through to sculpting.
Following a trip to Belgium with her mum, visiting an array of delicious chocolate shops, Ellie was inspired by a mandarin flavoured chocolate yet surprised that most of the shops were offering their naughty nibbles in the same colour – and voila, an idea was born.
Once home, Ellie started practicing at home with paints and chocolate and discovered her flair. With the use of social media, the creations were pushed out into the public eye and the response she received was amazing. With timing on side and Christmas fast approaching, Ellie began to receive order queries from businesses as well as individuals looking for the perfect gift for their family, colleagues and friends.
In March 2015, a 3rd floor studio in the centre of Nottingham became available to rent and there began Studio Chocolate. Later that year, Ellie created The Artist Collection – a range of chocolates inspired in taste and design by different famous artists. With demand continuously increasing and constant enquiries about classes, Studio Chocolate expanded to the buildings 1st floor studio where they now host classes, parties and have a shop area.
“It’s the best thing that we could’ve done to take Studio Chocolate to the next stage, it’s an incredible space to work in!”
As well as The Artist collection, Studio Chocolate also have The Cosmic Collection, inspired by the Solar System. A favourite piece of Ellie’s is the Venus chocolate with a taste of rhubarb and custard! The collections are painted to perfection and almost look too good to eat – almost! Be sure to keep a look out for a new exciting collection that will come out over the next few months.
As well as their delectable chocolate goodies, Studio Chocolate can also create, bake and decorate heavenly cakes. If you have your perfect cake in mind, Ellie welcomes your input for the size, flavour, style and personalisation with a wonderful bunch of options to choose from.
Offering a range of different parties and classes, you can taste and create your own chocolates with friends, family, colleagues, your partner or even spoil the kids with a children’s party. Learn everything there is to know with a one-to-one masterclass and walk away with your very own handmade chocolates. I mean who wouldn’t want to spend a few hours learning about and feasting on chocolate?
With the business continuing to grow, Studio Chocolate have recently taken on their first employee and Ellie will be moving into more of a managerial role. With goals to eventually branch out to other cities we have no doubt that Studio Chocolate will continue its success in the years to come!
