QUAD in Derby welcomes a range of authors and tutors for workshops, performances and events in November, offering something for new, aspiring or established writers.

A busy month of activities begins with the How to Get Published, a short course ideal for writers who have finished a project but don’t know what to do with it next, a guide on how to submit to an agent or publisher and tips on what goes into that submission package, where best to research for publication opportunities. How to Get Published Creative Writing course starts on Monday 6th November and runs for four weeks until 27th November. The latest of QUAD’s monthly writing workshops, with acclaimed author Caroline Pitcher, will be exploring Writing for Children. One of the most exciting and expanding areas of fiction, this workshop provides comprehensive informative for anyone looking to write for younger audiences. QUAD hosts monthly Literature Surgeries, for writers of any level, which are one-to-one sessions offering individual feedback on work, as well as tailored advice on your writing career. The opening event for the inaugural Derby Poetry Festival takes place in QUAD, welcoming one of the UK’s most popular poets and performers, Tony Walsh. A poet who has appeared all over the UK and worked internationally for the British Council, he was 2011 Poet-in-Residence at Glastonbury. In May 2017 Walsh rose to international acclaim after reading his poem ‘This Is the Place’ to crowds gathered for the public vigil to pay tribute to the victims of the Manchester Arena bombing. Tony Walsh will be live in QUAD on Thursday 23rd November at 6:30pm, Tickets are £10. https://www.derbyquad.co.uk/special-event/derby-poetry-festival-presents–tony-walsh.aspx The show will be followed by a Poetry Slam taking place in the QUAD Café Bar from 8:00pm.

Finally, Sledge-Lit is a day of horror, fantasy and science-fiction with a festive flavour offering a mix of panel discussions, workshops, readings and interviews. This year’s line-up of authors includes Alison Littlewood, Claire North and Sarah Pinborough. Sledge-Lit takes place in QUAD on the 25th November from 10:00am to 6:00pm.
