Derby Museum and Art Gallery
ARTIST ROOMS Richard Long

Drawn From the Land
2 December 2017 – 4 March 2018

Richard Long (b. 1945) was among the foremost of a new generation of British sculptors to emerge in the 1960s who extended the possibilities of sculpture beyond the confines of the studio and gave it meaningful existence as part of the place, time and substance of which it is made. He has said “my work is not illusory or conceptual. It is about real stones, real time, real actions. I use the world as I find it.”

The exhibition, Drawn From the Land, will accommodate the main gallery on the top floor of the Museum and Art Gallery, Derby. It brings together photographs, prints and sculpture, drawn from the ARTIST ROOMS collection, owned jointly by the National Galleries of Scotland and Tate.

This exhibition, which explores Richard Long’s connections with the land, will be dominated by the sculpture, Cornish Slate Ellipse (2009). Since the 1960s Long has extended the possibilities of sculpture beyond the studio and gallery in to the landscape. Drawn from the Land explores how this artist uses sculpture to explore the meanings in the places, times and the very materials with which he works.

Derby Museums are working to increase understanding of the world beyond the gallery, where the museum is the starting point for the exploration of the places that we inhabit, both urban and rural. Long’s work is rooted in his deep affinity with nature, developed during his walks in Britain and elsewhere across the world. Derby Museums will encourage visitors to venture outside the gallery, in to the landscape, to explore their place in the world as Long himself explores the “relationships between time, distance, geography and measurement” during his travels.

This exhibition is drawn from the ARTIST ROOMS collection of modern and contemporary art, displayed across the UK in solo exhibitions that showcase the work of more than 40 major artists. ARTIST ROOMS is part of the National Galleries of Scotland and Tate collections, and was established in 2008 through The d’Offay Donation with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund, and the Scottish and British Governments. The touring programme is supported by Arts Council England, Art Fund and Creative Scotland and since 2009, 40 million people have visited more than 150 displays at over 75 museums and galleries.

Tony Butler, Executive Director at Derby Museums said:

“Richard Long’s work helps us to understand the world around us. It reveals however solid and strong it appears, the Earth is still fragile and precariously balanced. It is great to be able to bring the work of this internationally renowned artist to the Museum and Art Gallery and share it with the people of Derby.”

The exhibition is free to enter. There is a voluntary donation scheme where Derby Museums will also be asking visitors to donate via their Give What You Think scheme, when they have visited the exhibition.

The ARTIST ROOMS exhibition at Derby Museum and Art Gallery will be accompanied by a programme of talks, walks and workshops, to explore the relevance of Long encouraging visitors to explore and better understand the places that they live in new and exciting ways.
